ICE is dumping hundreds of migrants without food or shelter at the El Paso Greyhound station yesterday and  the day before, and probably more today.

    Newsweek article.

Apparently, the government shutdown has caused ICE to dump migrants without warning or even processing them.

The Newsweek article has a quote form Beto O'Rourke and his recommendation to donate to Annunciation House.  I did that.

It seems they intentionally avoided even alerting shelters -

TEXAS TRIBUNE: "ICE dumps hundreds of migrants with nowhere to go at a bus station on eve of Christmas without warning shelters:

"Immigrations and Customs Enforcement agents began dropping off the migrants late Sunday at a local bus station without warning local shelters that usually take in large groups after they seek asylum and are released by federal agents. About 200 arrived Sunday, about 200 more arrived Monday and the total number could exceed 800 by Wednesday

shuts down the government because of too many people crossing the border (putting it charitably), and the result?

More unprocessed migrants dumped on the street with no way of keeping track of them.

Now, we know what that means but Trump was tweeting about the problem with actual coyotes crossing the southern border so how long till he is tweeting to his mouth breathers about all the "welfare checks" being handed out to these invaders.

I wish they would find another word.  Like health check or something.  This is the world we live in.

    Jakelin Caal Maquin (5.00 / 1) (#5)
by MKS on Tue Dec 25, 2018 at 09:29:53 PM EST
died in Lordsburg, New Mexico a couple of weeks ago.  I actually (by coincidence) drove through Lordsburg three or four days later.

Jakelin was a K'ekchi (Q'eqchi) Mayan from The Alta Verapaz and the northern jungles of Guatemala.

The K'ekchi Maya are quite stout people.   Historically, they repelled Pedro De Alvarado's attempt to conquer them military.  They were then approached by the Spanish priest De Las Casas through an offer of friendship and peace, and they invited the Spanish into their villages.  The province where the K'ekchi lived was accordingly re-named the Alta Verapaz (the land of true peace.)  And then their leaders were  murdered and their writings burned.

In 1954, the Dulles brothers had the CIA overthrow the Guatemalan democracy that had pursued land reform, and a series of dictators ensued.

Jakelin Caal Maquin shared a venerable last name with Mama Maquin. In 1980, Mama Maquin led a group of K'ekchi Maya on a march to the municipality of Panzos, Alta Verapaz with a list of demands and complaints involving land claims.  The military opened fire on them, killing dozens of women, children and unarmed men.  That massacre fueled the uprising of the K'ekchi.

In 1982, Reagan boosted Pres. Rios-Monnt, who implemented his infamous "beans or bullets" campaign against the Maya.  He was subsequently convicted of Crimes against Humanity for the genocide he perpetrated with U.S. complicity.

Anecdotally, the Maya did not talk when tortured.  After guerilla leaders were captured and held, the guerilla safe houses were never hit.

And, so, Jakelin fell unconscious in Lordsburg, New Mexico.  It is a very, very remote place, primarily known for being the town that Charles Manson reportedly said he would go to if he ever got out of prison.   The Chihuahuan desert surrounding Lordsburg is in my mind starkly beautiful and vast.  The town, however, is an abysmal hell hole.  Shuttered motel after shuttered motel litter the interstate exit.

I have often wondered why the U.S. so often inflicts death and suffering on the Maya and people of Guatemala.   One need not love them but why the complete abdication of any humanity?  And, the conclusion I have come to after these many years is that the people of Guatemala suffer because they have no power, and the good people of the U.S. simply do not care.

    Dossier wins again (5.00 / 2) (#25)
by CaptHowdy on Thu Dec 27, 2018 at 02:46:32 PM EST
    WASHINGTON
A mobile phone traced to President Donald Trump's former lawyer and "fixer" Michael Cohen briefly sent signals ricocheting off cell towers in the Prague area in late summer 2016, at the height of the presidential campaign, leaving an electronic record to support claims that Cohen met secretly there with Russian officials, four people with knowledge of the matter say.

During the same period of late August or early September, electronic eavesdropping by an Eastern European intelligence agency picked up a conversation among Russians, one of whom remarked that Cohen was in Prague, two people familiar with the incident said.

The phone and surveillance data, which have not previously been disclosed, lend new credence to a key part of a former British spy's dossier of Kremlin intelligence describing purported coordination between Trump's campaign and Russia's election meddling operation.

    Christopher Steele (5.00 / 3) (#30)

for the win again. The media is really going to rue the day they tittered about that dossier at cocktail parties but never wrote a word about it and then attacked Buzzfeed for actually publishing it.

    Parent
... of the Steele dossier by Buzzfeed News, and that was the Russian intelligence services' ability to then trace and arrest several of Christopher Steele's alleged sources inside the Kremlin and the Russian military.

I mean, these people literally risked their lives to talk to Steele, yet the editors at Buzzfeed were so eager to scoop their competitors that they likely never seriously considered the potential consequences of publication to these sources. As it stands, Mother Jones' David Corn had actually scooped Buzzfeed News by several months, but he went to extraordinary lengths to both conceal Steele's identity and not divulge his dossier's actual details.

At least one of Steele's sources -- Gen. Oleg Erovinkin of the State Security Service (FSB) -- was reported to have been killed as a result of Buzzfeed's cavalier decision to publish the dossier in full. Even Steele himself felt compelled to go underground with his family for a time after publication of his work, fearing retaliation from the Kremlin.

That said, once that proverbial cat was let out of the bag, at least one-third of Steele's findings have since been publicly verified as correct by the media, including McClatchy's revelations of Trump's attorney Michael Cohen's alleged trip to the Czech Republic. And the overall legitimacy of that intelligence, including allegations that Russia may possess damaging compromat on Trump's personal and professional life, remains a matter of significant public concern.

Sister Wendy Beckett, a Roman Catholic nun who interrupted a cloistered life of prayer in England in 1991 and soared to international stardom with lyrical BBC documentaries that made her one of the most improbable art critics in television history, died on Wednesday in the village of East Harling, England. She was 88.

that if we don't have teachers like Sr Wendy, that imaginative part of all us that needs art and stories ends up being colonized by spiritual hucksters and conspiracy theorists and the like.

Possibly this explains why the U.S is such an epicenter of fundamentalism and other paranoid fantasies: because art is so often poo-pooed as "soft", unnecessary, or downright useless. The con artists and exploiters here want that region of consciousness all to themselves.

    'Dannemora' was a very creepy story, ... (none / 0) (#70)
by Donald from Hawaii on Wed Jan 02, 2019 at 08:18:51 PM EST
... probably because none of the main characters who were involved in that escape attempt really had what I would call redeeming personal qualities. Episode 6 really laid it out for us just how awful and self-absorbed these people actually were. Patricia Arquette -- who I think is an attractive woman -- inhabited the role of Tilly to the extent that I barely recognized her, which reminded me of Charlize Theron's transformation into the murderous Eileen for "Monster," and Elizabeth Taylor letting herself go as the vicious Martha in "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?"

You gotta love beautiful actresses who aren't afraid to do cheap and trashy. It looks to be a great career move as they leave behind the ingenue phase of their careers, and they start seeking out more character-driven roles. The great Barbara Stanwyck, who you noted the other day, was one of those who were successful in that transition.

Speaking of actresses doing cheap and trashy, we finally saw John Huston's "The Misfits" in its entirety for the first time the other night at UH-Hilo's theatre, as part of a retrospective on the director's career. Jeez, Marilyn Monroe was really good in that film, more than holding her own in scenes with Clark Gable, Montgomery Clift, Thelma Ritter and Eli Wallach. I don't think the Hollywood studio system as it existed 60 years ago ever really understood just how good an actress she could be, if only they really watched her work. All they ever saw in her was T&A.

Sweat, he didn't actually do it.  Apparently.  Matt too.  Even as twisted and damaged as he was.  I loved that bit in the last episode talking about when he stole a horse and ran away from a foster home.

One bit.  I was googling pictures of the actual story and they did an an amazing job of recreating it.  You might not want to but there is a pic of the dead Richard Matt.  I swear it could be a still from the series.

The sound quality is good for it's size.  There's some free music it can play but if you want specific songs you have to have an account with something like Amazon Music.  We signed up for the Amazon Music free trial so we have instant access to something like 50 million songs.

So far, we've been playing the classics... Sinatra, The Beatles, Elvis.  Not sure how it figured this out, but when I just told it "play music" it chose The Doors.  I used to be a huge Doors fan.  Did it figure that out from my Beatles selection or did it do some kind of creepy search of my email, social media?

I finally got the wifi thermostat to work.  I can now control that with voice commands through Alexa or with my phone.  I probably sound really lazy here but I hate sitting down for dinner or to watch a movie and have the super loud furnace kick in when I don't want it to.

So far, with both devices, I've probably been the phone with customer service 6 or 7 times.

As an aficionado of film noir, I think there are few finer examples of that genre than "Double Indemnity." Personally, I think the secret of its success -- aside from screenwriter Raymond Chandler's tight script -- was director Billy Wilder's willingness to cast stars Fred MacMurray, Barbara Stanwyck and Edward G. Robinson against type.

Back in 1944, who would've thought until "Double Indemnity" that the often sinister Robinson could so effectively ground a film as its moral compass, or that easy-going MacMurray could be so good at being so bad? And as the scheming Phyllis, wholesome good girl Stanwyck became the archetype femme fatale. (She later credited legendary costume designer Edith Head for providing her the necessary insight into her character's devious motivations: "She dressed me to look cheap.") Each actor rose to the occasion for Wilder accordingly, and delivered a flawless performance.

In my honest opinion, "Double Indemnity" really deserved the Oscar as 1944's Best Picture, rather than Leo McCarey's saccharine-laden "Going My Way." 74 years later, the first of Wilder's cinematic masterpieces can still cast a mesmerizing spell on its viewers and lure them into its fatal web of duplicity and double-cross, while that Bing Crosby / good Catholic vehicle looks evermore like Hollywood's equivalent of stadium nachos, smothered in melted Velveeta and already looking stale before you even reach your seat for the game's first pitch.

A New Year's Eve celebration may be in the works: A federal judicial council, spearheaded by the very conservative Chief Judge of the 10th Circuit in Denver, Tim Tymkovich, dismissed 83 complaints lodged against Brett Kavanaugh.

The complaints ranged from allegations that he lied during judicial confirmation hearings in 2004 and 2006 as well as during his S.C. confirmation hearings, including inappropriate partisan statements showing bias and lack of temperament and his display of disrespect to Democratic members of the Senate Judiciary Committee.

While the judicial panel noted that the complaints were "serious", it stated that the lower court judges don't have authority to investigate or disciple Kavanaugh now that he is on the Supreme Court, and no longer covered by the misconduct rules.

Chief Justice Roberts forwarded the complaints  sent to him by DC Circuit Judge Karen LeCraft Henderson of the DC Court,(who was serving in place of Merrick Garland, who recused himself) on Oct 11, 2018, after Kavanaugh had been confirmed by the senate on October 6.

Judge Henderson indicated that she had screened the complaints and forwarded only those considered worthy of further review.

    POLITICO

Special Counsel Robert Mueller's office appears to have responded to a foreign company's bid to get the Supreme Court to step into a fight over a grand jury subpoena served on the firm.

Most details of the case remain under seal at the Supreme Court since the company asked for an emergency stay last week, but an entry in the high court's docket indicates a response was filed Friday, three days ahead of the Monday deadline set by the court. The filing was accompanied by an application to put the filing under seal, the Supreme Court docket says.

If the Supreme Court decides not to step into the dispute, the details of the fight could remain and the identity of the company and country involved could remain hidden from public view. But if the justices decide to grant some relief to the company or hear the case on the high court's regular docket, some additional details of the battle could surface, since the Supreme Court rarely entertains cases on an entirely secret basis.

... involving an earnest attempt by a Russian oligarch back in 2014 to bankroll French fascist leader Marine Le Pen's National Front party is indeed the rule rather than the exception, I'd have to ever so grudgingly grant that all those stories regarding the alleged sophistication of Russian intelligence and money laundering operations are perhaps a WEE bit overblown.

To those who would posit that it's yet more evidence of decay in our country's moral foundation, and who would complain that the left has been kicking the religious right in the cojones, I would simply retort, "And it's about damned time."

It's really too bad that sailor's husband wasn't dressed up as Santa Claus. Then we could've listened to Fox News whine some more about the "War on Christmas."

We are not going out (we never have done so on New Year's Eve) but we have champagne chilling, and a bunch of nice cheeses, charcuterie, and smoked salmon with which to celebrate later.

Oh, and on a different subject, apropos of nothing, in the Roman Catholic and Greek Orthodox calendars, today is the Feast Day of St. Melania.  Yes, that's right, it's Melania Trump's Name Day.

Never much for going out on NY eve.  We always called it amateur night.

But this year almost literally everyone I know has the flu.  My state is one of the 8 "high" states.  So for the next couple of weeks its delivery and drive thru and the running thru the grocery store at 4 am after using a dozen of those wipey things on anything I touch.

    I suck at being sick.

that's a very apt description. There was a time in my life when almost every night was New Year's eve.

I hope all these people on opioids have the good sense not to try mixing it with alcohol, NY's eve or no NY's eve. It's teetering on the abyss to do that.

... a college football game, but that Oregon-Michigan St. matchup had to have been the most anemic display on the field I've seen in at least 20 years, on the part of both teams. I can't figure out if the defenses were that good today or the offenses were really that awful. I hereby offer a motion that the Redbox Bowl be renamed the Buzzkill Bowl.

There is something flying around the skies that makes anyone who sees it kill themselves graphically, but very smartly, Bird Box never actually shows the audience the creatures; after all, what you imagine is oftentimes scarier than what you see.

There was a time when one of the producers was like, `No, you have to see something at some point'

"It was snake-like, and I was like, `I don't want to see it when it first happens. Just bring it into the room. We'll shoot the scene.' I turn and he's like this [growling at me.] It's making me laugh. It was just a long fat baby."

Director Susanne Bier added, "It so easily becomes funny. We actually shot that and spent a lot of energy on, but every time I saw it, I was like this is not going to be tense. It's just going to be funny. At first, Sandy was like, `I don't want to see it' because she thought it was scary. Then it was like, `Don't show it to me because [I'll laugh].' Every time I did it, I was like, `Sh!t, that's a different film.'"

"I'm so sorry you had to shoot that," Heisserer said.
